Being a Woman in the Music Industry
It can be difficult as a woman to be taken seriously in such a male-dominated industry. General Waste's Jasmine Maycock explores this in our Grassroots Exclusive clip.
Growing up with her father in a punk band, Jasmine has been familiar to how the music scene works in terms of which gender gets the most limelight. Especially in as loud and bold of a genre as punk, women were originally drowned out amongst the chaos.

That was the case until the subcultural movement of Riot Grrrl - with groups such as Bikini Kill, Bratmobile and the Gossip dominating the stages and creating a liberating trend of female punk. This helped to change the face of music forever.

Unfortunately, especially for newcomers to the industry such as Jasmine, sexism at local venues is still rife and male bands are usually the most sought-after, but Riot Grrrl still exists today and will be an influence for decades to come.
